Mains & Hydrants Department

Public Works maintains the city's water mains and service lines. Staff also repairs and replaces the city's fire hydrants.

City infrastructure serviced by this department includes:

  • more than 23,000 water service lines .
  • 430 miles of water mains, 6 to 30 inches in diameter.
  • more than 5,100 hydrants.

The water main replacement program has significantly reduced water main failures since it began in 1992. Visit our charts page to view the decreases in failures.

Corrosion caused by Fargo's aggressive soils ranks as the top reason for water main failure. Mains made of PVC plastic are used to replace those made from cast iron.
